The Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme (PMSS) is an initiative by the Government of India aimed at encouraging higher technical and professional education among the dependent wards and widows of ex-servicemen (ESM) and ex-Coast Guard personnel. Key Features of PMSS:

  • Financial Support: The scholarship offers a monthly stipend of ₹2,500 for boys and ₹3,000 for girls. This amount is disbursed annually to cover tuition fees and other educational expenses.

  • Number of Scholarships: Each academic year, a total of 5,500 scholarships are awarded, with an equal distribution of 2,750 scholarships each for boys and girls.

  • Duration: The scholarship is provided for the entire duration of the course, ranging from one to five years, depending on the course’s length.

Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible for the PMSS, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Admission Status: Must be enrolled in the first year of a technical or professional course (excluding lateral entry and integrated courses) at a recognized institution.

  2. Educational Qualifications: Should have secured a minimum of 60% marks in the qualifying examination (10+2, Diploma, or Graduation), as specified for various courses.

  3. Category of Applicant: Must be a dependent ward or widow of ex-servicemen or ex-Coast Guard personnel.

Priority for Scholarship Award:

The selection process prioritizes applicants based on the following categories:

  • Category 1: Wards and widows of ESM/Ex-Coast Guard personnel killed in action.

  • Category 2: Wards of ESM/Ex-Coast Guard personnel disabled in action and boarded out of service with disability attributable to military/coast guard service.

  • Category 3: Wards and widows of ESM/Ex-Coast Guard personnel who died during service due to causes attributable to military/coast guard service.

  • Category 4: Wards of ESM/Ex-Coast Guard personnel who received gallantry awards.

  • Category 5: Wards of serving ESM/Ex-Coast Guard personnel (below officer rank), subject to availability.

Application Process:

Applicants can apply for the PMSS through the following steps:

  1. Registration on National Scholarship Portal (NSP):

    • Visit the official NSP website

    • Click on “New Registration” and read the application guidelines carefully.

    • Fill in the required details, including personal information, educational qualifications, and bank details.

    • Complete the registration to receive an application ID and password.

  2. Application Submission:

    • Log in to the NSP portal using the application ID and password.

    • Select the “Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme for Central Armed Police Forces and Assam Rifles” option.

    • Fill in the scholarship application form with accurate details.

    • Upload necessary documents, such as:

      • Identity proof (Aadhaar card, passport, etc.).

      • Academic certificates (10+2 mark sheet, diploma, or graduation mark sheet).

      • Income certificate (if applicable).

      • Certificate of ESM/Ex-Coast Guard personnel (if applicable).

    • Review the application and submit it.

    • Take a printout of the application for future reference.

Important Documents Required:

  • Serving Certificate (for serving personnel) issued by Head of Office (HOO).

  • Certificate indicating that the State Police personnel were killed in Naxal/terror attacks (if applicable).

  • Minimum Educational Qualification (MEQ) certificate, such as class 12th mark sheet.

  • Pension Payment Order (PPO), Discharge Certificate, or Book (for ESM).

  • Death Certificate (for deceased personnel).

  • Disability Certificate (for disabled personnel).

  • Certificate of Gallantry Award (if applicable).

  • Bank passbook or canceled cheque of the student’s account.

  • Aadhaar card of the student or parent.

Renewal of Scholarship:

For the continuation of the scholarship in subsequent years, students must apply for renewal through the NSP portal after each academic year. The renewal process involves verifying the academic progress and uploading necessary documents. Detailed guidelines for renewal are available on the NSP website.
